Response from Andy Asherbranner:

The last study done by the city was done in 2007 and did not address low cost housing for those in need.  All aspects of economic greatness and prosperity that any city undergoes are always dependent on safe, affordable housing. If there is no safe, affordable housing that those who often hold the lower paying service jobs usually single parent women, immigrants and minorities cannot live and work in the city.  Agencies such as the Regina Housing Authority are meant to be the means by which local and provincial government helps to regulate safe, affordable, housing. As a city councillor I would force regulations to address rundown, unsafe, over priced rental housing, requiring they maintain their rental properties to safe acceptable standards. I would also look at expanding the target areas currently covered by inter-city housing stimulation strategy tax exemption program. I will work closely with the Regina Housing Authority  and other agencies  and stakeholders to address housing shortages. However, the city government cannot be in the housing market but could and should give tax incentives to offset the cost of those who build low cost housing. The city should provide the safe neighbourhoods through proactive policing, maintenance of infrastructure and affordable and timely public transit.
