Y's Kids - Children Exposed to Violence

When there is abuse in the parents' relationship, children will be affected. They may not have the words to talk about it, but children are usually more aware of abuse and its repercussions than adults think they are. The experience of living in a home where abuse is present can affect the way a child feels, thinks and behaves.

The Y's Kids Program for Children Exposed to Violence provides a safe place where children and teens can explore their many feelings. It gives them age-appropriate ways to understand what has taken place. It equips them to sort out which behaviours are abusive and to find healthy ways to deal with conflict and emotions.

The program is appropriate for children aged 5 — 16 who:

  • have a memory of violence in their homes, and
  • are experiencing adjustment difficulties that are likely associated to violence in their homes

Parents may refer their children into the program. Once a referral is received, staff do a brief assessment to determine whether Y's Kids group or individual services are right for each child. There is no fee. A mother's group for parenting support is available.

To refer a child, contact Sheila at 525-2141 ext. 117

Call Melanie at 525-2141 ext. 132 to find out more about volunteering with YWCA children's programs.
